Did you try the more secure ms ole db driver library in the dropdown?
If the credentials contain a note about localhost or 127.0.0.1,. If yes, does it point to some server outside your private network? Did the credentials you got include a hostname or ip address? The crash is a stream read error, and it's caused by a malformed file encoding.
